Why we believe in therapist-led group practice

We believe some of the best group practices are built by people who know the work from the inside.

When therapists lead, they bring something you can’t learn from a business book. You know what a full caseload feels like, why a good client match matters, and what burnout looks like before it shows up. That perspective shapes everything, from how you set caseloads to how you hire, train, and support your team.

We started The Therapy Group in 2014 as two therapists who wanted to build the kind of practice we’d want to work in. Our clinical background has guided every decision since, and it’s the reason we love helping other therapists do the same.

Here’s what we’ve seen therapist-led group practice make possible:

  • Care stays at the center. Decisions about caseloads, fees, and policies are made by people who know what good therapy takes.

  • Clinicians feel supported. Consultation, mentorship, and community are part of the day, led by people who have been in the chair.

  • Clients feel the difference. Thoughtful matching, a consistent experience, and a team that knows each other.

  • Your vision shapes the practice. You get to build something that reflects your values and the way you believe therapy should be done.

Who this group practice cohort is for

This cohort is only for therapists who want to start a group practice or already run one. If you plan to stay in individual practice, it isn’t the right fit. It’s for you if:

You’re full and turning people away. Your caseload is maxed, referrals keep coming, and you’re ready to build something bigger than your own calendar.

You’ve hired, and it’s harder than you expected. Fees, contracts, supervision, the clinician who isn’t working out. Nobody handed you the manual.

You want a practice that doesn’t need you in every room. More income, less burnout, and a team you trust to do great work.

Sunlit modern concrete and wood breakfast nook with a stone table, ceramic pitcher, cup, open notebook, pen, and folded blue blanket.

Inside each session: 90 minutes of teaching, consultation, and Q&A

Think of it as a group practice mastermind with a real curriculum behind it. Every monthly session follows the same rhythm:

Teach. Em and Jen walk through the month’s topic with the frameworks, scripts, and lessons from building The Therapy Group.

Consult. Hot-seat time on your practice. Bring the real situation: the hire, the fee conversation, the policy you keep putting off.

Q&A. Open questions from the group. With 10 owners max, everyone gets heard.

Live on Zoom, recorded for you

Join from your office, your couch, or anywhere in between. Every session is held live on Zoom and recorded, and you have access to the recordings, so a missed month never means missed material.

What you’ll learn: a 6-month group practice curriculum

Each month builds on the last, starting with you and your vision, then your numbers, your culture, your team, your systems, and the marketing that keeps every caseload full.

Month 1: Vision, Mission & the Founder in You

Get clear on what you want your life to look like, write a mission statement, and look at the personal patterns you bring into leadership before you build anything around them.

Month 2: Your Numbers: Fees, Caseload & When to Hire

Set fees that sustain a team, choose a clinician pay model, plan how you’ll reduce your own caseload, and know the numbers that tell you it’s time to hire clinical or admin help.

Month 3: Culture, Delegation & Your Time

Build a culture that comes from your mission, delegate with clear expectations, and get your calendar back so the practice stops running through you.

Month 4: Hiring, Firing & Clinician Issues

Write the job post, interview for fit, handle the clinician who isn’t working out, and work through what managing therapists brings up for you as a therapist yourself.

Month 5: Policies, Procedures & Systems

Put your onboarding, handbook, and day-to-day procedures in writing so expectations are clear and the practice runs the same way whether or not you’re in the room.

Month 6: Marketing & Networking That Fills Caseloads

Get found online, build referral relationships, and create a steady flow of clients for every clinician on your team.
